Default My latest purchase, a 14.5” Bore 35 HP Superior, or is it?

One of my latest acquisition is a 35 hp Superior, This would be my first big engine, I have been involved with these type of projects for 40 years. My existing collection includes,, (by far my nicest piece a) IHC 10 HP Horizontal ( predecessor to the titan famous line of engines), 7 Hp Hercules cart mounted saw rig, 5 HP Troy Steam Engine, 6 HP Associated ect,ect.

Anyway here is what I now about the 35 Superior.
3241 cubic inches, that’s 14.5” bore with a 19.625” stroke.
By the way we weighted the piston and rod assembly, it weighted- 390 pound and as seen in the attached pictures it stands taller than I do and look how small the 5 gallon bucket is compared to the piston, that sure seems like a lot of reciprocating mass to me, It has 65.5” flywheels, and the cylinder head casting that weighted in at 435 pounds, we have not weighted her yet but she has to be really heavy.
The limited history I have on her is Jon Rozevink Bought her at the George Helmuth Estate sale some where in Illinois, I want to thank Jon for the opportunity to purchase the old girl, I feel he treated me very fairly in this transaction as the estate auction record were posted on line and easily found, Thanks again Jon…
Now is it a 35 or not, The cylinder has (X915) cast in to it, ( casting ID ??) It also has OO CO 35HP cast into the cylinder, Some of the other parts have 35 / 40 cast into them, I now a few of you guys have 35 hp Superiors, what are the bore/stroke of yours, online I have found 12”bore by 20”stroke listed as 35HP ??
Any and all additional info on this engine or others like it would be greatly appreciated,
We recently got the old girl unstuck (if you will), that was a battle with all the piston area. The bore looks very usable and the piston and rings look great. The piston is stamped STD by the way.
I will be posting pictures and asking questions as the project progresses.
Questions I have at this point are:
Is there any place I should look for I D numbers??
What years did they make these engines and how do I date mine??
What does she weight??
Is she a 35 or a 40??
What RPM did they spec. for here??
What type of gasket material for the head gasket and other gaskets should be used??
Were should the spark plug go and what type plug??
Pictures of the compression release arrangement for these engines??
Please enjoy the Pictures, and thanks for any info you might provide.

It is indeed a 35hp. Weight: 8000 lbs!

I used to have a 35, its now at the local show grounds. It is a very easy starting engine consider its size. They run very quiet too, even with a straight pipe.

Looks like a great engine. We have a 25 HP, just like your's but not quite as big. The SN on ours is stamped on the rear of the cylinder. I don't know any way to date these engines. The OOCO stands for Ohio Oil Company or so I was told. The spark plug screws into a hole in the side of the intake valve box. I had some hot tube chimneys cast a few years ago if you want to go that route. Gasket material is available from sponsors of this web site. The compression release is a big washer kind of thing that is placed onto the end of roller pin on the rocker arm. It rides up on the extra cam lobe on the end of the side-shaft and holds the rocker arm open through most of the compression stroke. They are great running engines and surprisingly quiet when they run. Hi , Dave. I'll be watching your progress with great interest. I just got home with a 20 hp superior that now takes up the main bay of my shop until I can get it moved off to the side. I weighed my piston and rod and it weighed in at 265# It is a 20" bore. I don't know what the stroke is yet, but 20" sound about right. Is yours mag fired? If so, what mag? Mine is a WICO R1. I believe the 20's weigh in at a little over 5400#s.

Anyhow keep us up to date with what's happening.

Keith, I spent about an hour studying the Pictures and info you had sent across to me. It was very helpful and informative. What a great project with you son, what great memories he will have.

The flat rock engines, That would be great to see working.
We need to find some one coming this way to tow Rods Patten engine home.

Walt, I have been following your thread on you find, The pictures of the 20 look great,
My 35 is mag fired, Wico , Did you mean to say the bore of you 20HP is 20” in Dia.

Questions I still have at this point are:
Is there any place I should look for I D numbers??
What years did they make these engines and how do I date mine??
Dimension on the compression release roller, width and O.D.??
What type of spark plug??

No , Dave the bore is 12". I tried to edit that to 12 but was unsucessful.

I'm glad you found my web site useful. Yes, I had a great time working with by Son and Dad on that project.
Sparkplug, We were having trouble with our engine at Portland the year we took it. One of the other Superior engine owners said I needed to find a Champion "Gas Engine Special #33" plug. I went to the vendor area and found a NOS plug and it works great. They turn up on Ebay fairly often but don't come cheap. $25-40. The #34 will also work and is the same plug but has a longer reach I believe. They are old style take apart plugs. I'm sure others will work too.
FYI, there is a guy on ebay selling reproduction Superior catalogs. I bought one but they are for the industrial engines and not the "oil field" engines.
If I remember right the 20 HP has a 11.5" bore, the 25 is 12".
