Default Briggs and Stratton 190432 mix-master engine?

So I have been given an 8HP vertical cylinder, horizontal shaft engine to goof off with, and I plan to build a little 5KW genset with it. The engine was very dirty and partially disassembled when I got it, but it seems to mostly be there. It didn't run, but after assembling the crankcase and putting some oil in, putting the muffler back on and pull-starting the thing after spraying a bit of brake cleaner in the intake port, it will fire and run-and with careful misting of the intake port it will continue running hit-and-miss style.

The big problem is that the intake valve stem is severely pitted and sticks occasionally. When it sticks, (every two or three times I went to play with it) I have to pull the head off, pull the valve cover, and work at it to get it to unstick.

I cleaned up the cover, and it claims to be a Briggs 190432-5535-01 89102410. But, it doesn't quite match up.

It's an 8HP cool-bore aluminum cylinder, with a 1" output shaft, mechanical governor, single-ball bearing crankshaft, a side-draft carburator, and a magneto style coil, so no points. It had a cast iron bracket with a belt driven Delco-Remy starter/generator mounted on it, and instead of a recoil starter, it has a pulley with a rope notch, AND a 8" diameter pulley that bolts to the flywheel, through the mesh screen, that the starter/generator attaches to.

I can't find any mention of a 190432 engine with the aluminum cylinder AND a ball-bearing crank, nor any mention of a 190432 with any kind of belt-drive electric start. I do find electric start models with gear drive starters, and alternator coils made to mount around the flywheel, but nothing exactly like what I have.

I work in a machine shop, so I bought a new pair of valves, and I'll fit bronze inserts into the existing guides to clean them up. I've considered sleeving the cylinder while I'm at it, with an iron liner. Since the bore is in good shape, I figure I'll just fix the valves and get it running reliably first.

Once it runs and the valve seal up, I am going to set it up with a honda-pattern natural gas/propane carb and demand regulator, and configure it with the electric start as a standby genset or field genset for ham radio stuff.

Welcome to smokstak. Pincor used the 7hp 275cc 170432 and the 8hp 319cc 190432 on their own 3kw 3600rpm generator heads. The 7hp models were 120 volt only and the 8hp models were 120/240. Your 8hp engine will not have the power to run a 5kw generator head under full load. The 11hp 400cc 256400 series engines were used on the 5000 watt 3600rpm generator heads. These engines really do not live a very long service life operating at 3600rpm. The service life of the valve train is only about fifty hours. Do not even bother boring and sleeving your engine, B&S built an I/C version of this engine (196402) which has a cast iron sleeve already in it. They were common on walk behind leaf blowers, leaf vacs and pumps. I have rebuilt both the 170432 and 190432 B&S series engines. Both utilize a ball bearing on the PTO side of the crankshaft, and rely on the aluminum crankcase as the flywheel side main bearing. You'd be better off finding a two bearing pioneer gen-e-motor and belt driving a 2500 watt generator at a lower engine speed for better economy, less noise and greater engine life.

With your mention of having a belt driven generator/starter the model number would have been 190434. Perhaps someone ordered and installed or had installed the B&S 297336 starter/generator kit to the 190432 model engine sometime after it was bought.

The model number 190432 says it all. The "19" cu in is 8hp, the "0" is aluminum bore, the "3" is ball brg pto side, the "2" is recoil starter. Now somebody has replaced the shroud or more likely, took a standard engine, added the starter/generator and the 8" pulley. An electric start engine would have a flywheel with ring gear, magnets inside and a charging stator also.

B & S has a finish reamer for the valve guides, the valves need to be looser than you would think is normal. Very wobbly is stock, you have to leave for expansion.
